The cut refers not only to the gemstone's shape, but also to the care and precision used in creating a finished gem from the rough. There are many popular shapes for gemstones. However, if the stone is well cut, its brilliance endures no matter the shape.

There are some universally accepted terms used when referring to faceted (cut) gemstones. These "parts" of the stone can vary in proportion and affect the faceted stone's brilliance, beauty and desirability.  They are:

Girdle:   The edge or border of the stone that forms its perimeter. It can also be described as the line where the top and bottom portion of the stone meet.

Crown:   The "top" section of the stone. It is the part directly above the girdle but below the table.

Pavilion:   The bottom section of the stone directly below the girdle.

Culet:   The lowest part or point of the stone.

Table:   The very top part of the stone. it is also known as the stone's face and is the part of the stone most often viewed.

The cutting and proportioning of a gemstone is especially important because of its effect on the fire (color flash) and the brilliance (sparkle).  This is especially true with diamonds.  Proper cutting and proportioning release the full beauty of the stone.  Stones adhering to the proper proportioning are said to have an "ideal" cut.

All Lannyte® Simulated Diamonds are cut to ideal specifications to produce maximum fire and brilliance.
